What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a serious condition in the body when our body cannot produce insulin on its own or use the insulin produced efficiently. This causes blood sugar or glucose levels to be higher than normal.

Insulin regulates the entry of sugar into the cells of the human body. It acts as a “key”. By this, the sugar or glucose obtained from our food can be transported through the blood and enter the cells. Then, cells use that glucose for the energy the body needs. Insulin is produced from the hormone islets (i-lets) made by special cells in the pancreas. Diabetes-related insulin fluctuations cause our blood sugar levels to fluctuate. Several abnormalities also occur in the body.

Types of Diabetes:

There are two types of Diabetes:

Type 1:

Type 1 diabetes is insulin-dependent. It affects children and those under 30 years of age. 10 percent of all diabetics in the world suffer from this type of diabetes. When the beta cells in the pancreas are damaged, insulin production is reduced or stopped. In this condition, lack of insulin leads to type 1 diabetes. Then the body cannot use the stored glucose to produce energy. The blood glucose level is therefore increased.

Type 2:

In type 2 diabetes, the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are not damaged. But the body stops taking insulin. In other words, in the case of type 2 diabetes, the human body becomes unable to make full use of insulin. As a result, the blood sugar level increases at an excessive rate.

Type 1 and Type 2 are the two most common forms of diabetes. Other types of diabetes can also occur, such as gestational diabetes, neonatal diabetes, gestational diabetes, etc.

Common Symptoms of Diabetes:

Some common symptoms of diabetes are-

1. Excessive thirst:

Increased thirst and hunger are common symptoms of high blood sugar. It doesn’t matter how much water you are drinking or eating throughout the day. If someone is feeling more thirsty and hungry again and again, then it can be a symptom of high blood pressure. Actually, when glucose reaches excess in the muscles, the body gets dehydrated and starts feeling thirsty. After this, your body draws liquid from the tissues of the body to dilute the blood and reduce the level of glucose, and you feel thirsty.

2. Smelling Urine:

Experts say that if there is a sweet smell coming from someone’s urine, it is a sign that your blood sugar level has become very high. Generally, the amount of sugar coming out of the body through urine cannot be detected. However, if one’s blood sugar level is high, then the sugar leaves the blood through the kidneys and is excreted through urine.
