Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, and it’s no surprise that there’s been a lot of research into the health benefits of coffee for weight loss. Whether or not black coffee should be served with cream or sugar has been a hot point of debate for years.

A recent study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shed light on the impact of consuming unsweetened coffee on weight, as well as the consequences of introducing sugar into coffee.

The study found that people who drank unsweetened coffee had a slight decrease in body weight, and those who drank sweetened coffee had some increase in body weight.

This finding suggests that unsweetened coffee may play a role in weight management. However, it is important to emphasize that further research is needed to confirm these findings.

The main goal of the study was to determine whether coffee consumption was associated with weight loss and to look at how the use of cream, sugar or nondairy whiteners affected overall health outcomes. The research was based on large data sets and a large number of participants. The data was collected from three main health studies.

Strict inclusion criteria were used to select participants for the analysis. For instance, missing data or people with pre-existing conditions at the beginning of the study (e.g., cancer, heart disease or diabetes) were excluded. Altogether, over 155,000 participants were included in the analysis.

Lose weight long-term

To get a better understanding, researchers looked at data from food frequency questionnaires completed at the start of the study and every four years afterward.

These questionnaires asked participants about how often they drank coffee, whether it was decaffeinated or regular, and how often they added cream, sugar or nondairy whitener.

The study did not look at the effects of cream, bleach or nonfat milk on body weight. The researchers also looked at weight changes that occurred over four years and controlled for a variety of factors, such as eating habits, alcohol use, physical activity, and medical conditions.

The results showed that drinking one cup of coffee daily (regular or decaffeinated) resulted in a modest loss of body weight (0.12 kg) over the four-year period.

Adding just one teaspoon of sugar per day was associated with a 0.09 kg weight gain over the same period.

The authors of the study concluded that their findings may provide a promising approach to weight management, particularly in overweight and obese patients, as sugar-induced weight gain was more common in these patients.
